Anatomy of a Context Seed

Understanding the two components that give AI instant understanding.

A context seed is a combination of a prompt and a data file provided to an AI via a link. When you click the link, the prompt loads into a new chat window, framing the conversation and directing the AI to reference the accompanying data file for additional context.

The Prompt

The prompt is critical — it sets up the entire conversation that follows. It provides instructions that frame the core question and include a reference to a dedicated data file (either markdown or JSON).

A typical prompt might be:

"Help the user understand Acme Corp. and how Acme Corp anvils can fit into their workflow. Use the referenced files as a starting point in the conversation."

Or for a person:

"Help the user understand how Wile E. Coyote can best help them with catching Road Runners. The files referenced contain information on Wile's skills, work history, and current endeavors."

The Data File

The data file provides the additional context and supplementary information the AI needs. It may also include links to further resources.

The structure and format you choose depends on the AI system being used and how it handles references.

LLM Considerations

Different AI models have different capabilities when it comes to following and using links within context. For example:

  • Claude will follow HTTP/HTTPS links it encounters in text or markdown format
  • ChatGPT can construct links dynamically by substituting variables into URL patterns
  • Each AI has its own rules for how it processes and retrieves linked content

When designing a context seed, it's important to structure both the prompt and data file with these differences in mind, as the same seed may not work equally well across different AI platforms.
